2017 - 2017: Kubernetes Multi-Cloud + OnPrem

Customer: PricewaterhouseCoopers

Tasks:

• For multiple reasons the customer needed to deploy to multiple clouds ? in example to ensure availability and fail-over between different cloud providers or in some cases to match compliance restrictions (jurisdiction, regions, blacklisted providers etc)
• Besides setting up Kubernetes clusters on all major cloud providers I?ve built tools to easily deploy to these from a single codebase and from a single GitLab instance

2017 - 2017: On-Prem Kubernetes Setup

Customer: PricewaterhouseCoopers

Tasks:

• As some data cannot be stored in public clouds (very sensitive financial data) I?ve needed to implement a OnPrem Kubernetes environment using RedHat OpenShift
• VMWare VMs were automatically provisioned (Terraform/Puppet) and Kubernetes installed making it an autoscaled environment like cloud providers offer
• All deployment actions were handled right in the cluster by running Gitlab Runners in the same environment
• This ensures that a developer never needs passwords for services and docker registries

2016 - 2016: Boilerplates for Bootstrapping of Cloud Projects in K8S

Customer: PricewaterhouseCoopers

Tasks:

• As development teams were working with different software and different coding languages I?ve built boilerplates for different tech stacks to help them go fast when starting a new project or migrating projects to automated delivery pipelines
• These contained full templates for building docker containers, Kubernetes deployments, configuration of different databases and stacks like NodeJS/React/Mongo, Java/PostgreSQL, Python/PostgreSQL and a few more. Developers adopted quickly and improved their lead-time (time from idea to market) significantly

2015 - 2016: Training & Coaching Development Teams DevOps Mindset & Tools

• Training and Coaching sessions with development teams in multiple locations around Europe and India. Bringing the DevOps mindset and principles across
• Enabling them to use the environments and tools that were already built but also to enhance these and share improvements with other development teams
• Building the basis for cross-location cross-team collaboration and learning. Implementing company-internal developer events.

2015 - 2015: Automation of Application Deployments / Delivery Pipeline

Customer: PricewaterhouseCoopers

Tasks:

• As the customer wanted to enable development teams to own, deploy and manage their applications and services themselves I?ve started building a basic delivery pipeline building docker containers, running tests and deployment to PaaS services in the cloud
• This pipeline was then extended to support more actions, automatically detect used software and using pre-built configurations (like Heroku)
• At a later stage it was deploying to a GCP/Azure/AWS Kubernetes cluster with Gitlab Runners running in the same cluster to ensure developers never need to touch passwords for Docker registries or any other services

2014 - 2014: Automation of application deployments

• Drupal 7 is not capable of handling automatic deployments by default
• One major challenge was the fact that a lot of configuration is happening in the database, so I?ve built a layer around Drupal taking care of all relevant configuration changes during deployments
• Besides that - as there was data written in the database by human during deployments ? we needed to make sure to migrate content after a successful deployment as well as implement roll-back and roll-forward procedures and health checks

2014 - 2014: Infrastructure Deployments to mixed environment (OnPrem, Cloud)

• As a second step to migrating OnPrem infrastructure deployments and configuration to IaC I?ve supported the customer in transferring multiple services to AWS (e.g. CDN for images and videos) and automate deployments to these mixed environments

Bauer Media Group | 2014

When I started the project infrastructure was completely managed by Operations. In case a developer wanted to change server configuration he needed to approach the respective team (different organization unit). In case of new servers orders needed to be placed.

In a first step we?ve automated server deployments and configuration by using Puppet and Terraform and onboarded the first developers and allowed them to change their respective infrastructure themselves.
