As the SRE Manager, I was tasked with building the technical foundation of the new major release of our Company's SaaS product on AWS. This included overseeing the entire technical platform, from system design and architecture to team building and everything in between.
I worked closely with all engineering teams to ensure that the technical foundation was solid and scalable, allowing for future growth and success.
Throughout the development process, I remained focused on the end goal of delivering a product that provided maximum value to our customers and the business. By always keeping this in mind and seeking out the best leverage to create more efficiency, I was able to create a platform and team that not only met technical requirements but also delivered real impact and value for our customers and the business
As the SRE Engineering Manager, I led the next iteration of our company's platform engineering efforts, with a focus on building a Landing Zone on GCP. My responsibilities included providing enablement for engineering teams on IaC using Terraform or GCP Config Connector, and ensuring observability of the platform through the use of Datadog and open telemetry.
In addition, I implemented IAM concepts using GCP Workload identity to ensure that our platform was secure and in compliance with regulations. Working closely with cross-functional teams, I developed and implemented appropriate policies and procedures to safeguard our platform and data.
As a DevOps Engineer at the innovation hub of Deutsche Bahn, I had the pleasure of working on exciting and advanced projects. Using my expertise in Kubernetes, AWS EKS, GitLab, and Terraform module development, I built efficient and scalable services that seamlessly integrated with the cloud environment. To ensure maximum observability, I leveraged the power of Prometheus, Alertmanager, and Jaeger. Additionally, I was proud to have created custom admission controllers using Kyverno, adding an extra layer of security to our systems.
During my time as a Senior Site Reliability Engineer at Mote, I had the privilege of leading several critical initiatives that transformed our infrastructure for the better. From containerizing the application on AWS ECS, to building custom orbs on Circle CI, and developing Terraform modules, I drove significant improvements that streamlined our workflows and increased our efficiency. Additionally, my work with Datadog allowed us to create powerful dashboards and configure APM, while my experience with Vanta compliance tool strengthened our security and compliance posture. Through these efforts, I helped position Mote for sustained success and growth, and I'm proud of the lasting impact I made on the team.
As a Senior Platform Engineer, I thrive on the challenges of creating scalable and reliable cloud infrastructure. My days are filled with exciting endeavors such as implementing an AWS Multi-Account Strategy to ensure optimal security and resource utilization, leading a successful Kubernetes migration, and developing advanced Terraform modules. I take great pride in shaping our microservice architecture using cutting-edge technologies like AWS ECS and Kafka, driving innovation and efficiency at every turn.
Transform to a new Tech Organisation- As part of the management team, we have transformed the following topics in our new organization of 120 engineers:
Ways of Working:
Implemented Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) Talent Management: New hiring process, career path and people engagement
Organization:
new org structure with four technical domains and it's product counterparts
Architecture:
We formed architecture and development guiding principles. To keep track and fulfil these guidelines, we installed an architecture board with a seat for the solution architects in all teams from each domain, with me as the chairman
Architecture and launch of various microservices in an AWS Autoscaling environments- To achieve the goal of an easy to adapt and fast to spawn service landscape of cost-efficient and high available services on AWS, I developed a template for provisioning and releasing those.
All services had to handle tv-broadcasting related flash-traffic (instant burst of millions of request) and therefore they made use of a tool that I wrote to easy create custom metrics for AWS Cloudwatch to make scaling decisions in autoscaling groups.
As the cloud-topic was pretty new I taught engineers how to build their services the cloud native way. How to use AWS Services to build stateless machines and swap out any necessary persistence layers to other services, was the main mission.
Identity and access Management - I developed a web-based software solution based on python-django, provided a ldap and SAML interface to let various systems authenticated against it.
The complexity was caused be the various compliance requirements. We had to build a complex approval workflow to grant access to specific systems and their provided roles. Also the user lifecycle was covered, with various workflows to prolong externals and limit there overall rights in the tool itself.
