"In September 2001 I was asked to manage the largest IT program at Philips - namely, to integrate a company that we just acquired and to build and end-to-end IT infrastructure, including all business applications within a very tight deadline of 12 months! As the program manager, one of my first duties was to secure the talent, both internally and externally to accomplish this monumental task. One of the key areas that required focus was the sales and distribution model, since the new company handled much many more transactions than the existing company. The sales model was completely different from Philips's model, which meant we would need to develop some additional functionality in our SAP system. Also, we would need to drive an impressive training program to teach 5000 people the Philips way of doing things. My first thought was to bring in the consultant, who had worked with Philips as an effective change agent across various businesses. He had gone on to start his own company, providing "hands on" consulting support to companies dealing with major change and IT deployments. Lucky for me he was available and I hired him on to drive the sales piece of this program. Undaunted by the 'mission impossible' task before him, he accepted the challenge head on and persevered -- very soon the field requirements were clearly defined, a priority listing of the critical functionality completed and a clear milestone plan that delivered on time and within budget. This first assignment was approximately 6 months, when the consultant and the team delivered the tested new functionality. Following his superb performance I asked him to take charge of the change management and communication activities of the program, thus joining my core team. In this function he was responsible for all the change management activities targeted at all levels, from the board level of Philips to the remote field people who needed to be kept abreast of all developments and given instructions for the changes to come. The 5000 people we took over had to be moved out of their HSG offices into Philips local offices, they had to be trained on new systems and processes and they had to adapt to a new company culture -- all within a matter of months. He did an excellent job of defining the change strategy and preparing the means of communication that in the end led to the successful and timely "cutover" from HSG to Philips. Having been a CIO for Philips Medical and now VP of Supply Chain, I have extensive experience with both business and IT consultants. The consultant has earned my respect for his hard work, his ability to consistently deliver results, and very importantly, his strength in defining the path forward and getting people motivated to achieve even the impossible. He is a trusted advisor, who is open and honest. He is a pleasure to work with and a good sense of humor -- which is needed, especially when tensions are high. I recommend him highly."
